Plyometric qualities can be assessed in several ways. A simple vertical jump test indirectly assesses explosive power in the lower limb, so it is useful to monitor regularly in order to track improvements. The assessment is simple to complete and involves little excessive loading, so is therefore suitable for runners of any standard and experience. The sergeant jump test is traditionally used by many practitioners to assess vertical jump height, and requires only chalk and a tape measure.

Stand side-on to a wall with your arm raised overhead and mark the point where your fingertips reach

Rub a small amount of chalk on your fingertips

Leap vertically as high as possible, slapping the wall with your chalked fingers at the highest point
